Holiday Hope & Art from Our Heart

Sunday, November 13th
9:00 a.m. -- 1:00 p.m.

The holidays are upon us, and with their arrival often come a variety of emotions, memories, and expectations that center on family traditions and celebrations.

Mourning Hope recognizes that this time of year can be especially difficult for those grieving the death of a loved one. Please join us for an afternoon of discussion and activities focused on supporting families and honoring your loved one through the holiday season.

Let the warmth of friendship take the chill from the air, and the spirit of the season make winter easier to bear.

This winter we are combining Holiday Hope and Art From Our Heart! Youth will be joined by local artists in creating holiday memory items honoring their loved one. Caregivers will be treated to a 3 hour session full of encouraging ideas and discussion to help them navigate through the holiday season.

There is a $20 supply fee for youth participating in Art from Our Heart. Lunch is provided. Registration is required.

To register call 488.8989 or e-mail jbass@mourninghope.org.

Art from Our Heart

In order to foster emotional healing and encourage individual creativity, "Art From Our Hearts" partners skilled, local artists with children who have experienced the serious illness or death of someone significant in their lives. Sometimes words are too difficult, but children can often express their feelings through other means, such as art. By working in tandem with professional local artists and trained grief facilitators, attendees will gain valuable insight and understanding regarding their personal grief journey. "Art From Our Hearts" is an opportunity for Nebraska children to connect with others, continue the healing process through art making and awaken a sense of hope.

These summer workshops are designed for children in kindergarten through 5th grade. Participants may attend one or both sessions.

Dates:
Saturday, July 24th, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m.

H.U.G.S. Grief Camp

Helping to Build Wings of Strength and Courage

H.U.G.S. (Helping Us Grieve Successfully) is a one day grief camp for children (ages 5 and up), teens and their families that have experienced the death of a loved one or friend. This year the camp will be held on Saturday June 19th at the Lincoln Children's Zoo from 9:00 am -3:30 p.m. The theme for the camp this year is Exploring the Life Cycle of Butterflies. Throughout the day, the camp participants will do various art and craft projects that explore the similarities between grieving and becoming a butterfly. In doing these activities kids will talk about their grief, learn to understand their feelings better and get support from peers that are also grieving. By the end of the camp, a beautiful transformation occurs for these youth, as they become courageous and strong in coping with their grief.

The H.U.G.S grief camp is a community sponsored event, held annually. Registration forms for the H.U.G.S grief camp are now available. The fee for the camp is $15.00 and includes Zoo experience, lunch and youth T-shirts. Scholarships are also available. You can obtain a registration form www.hugscamp.org or contact Kathryn Burklund at Lincoln Parks and Recreation, (402) 441-4900.

The Many Faces of Grief: Honoring Cultural Diversity

Monday, April 12, 2010
4:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
BryanLGH Medical Center East Plaza
1600 S. 48th Street, Lincoln, NE

The Many Faces of Grief: Honoring Cultural Diversity will be held on April 12, 2010 at BryanLGH Medical Center East Plaza.

Thanks to the generosity of the Community Health Endowment of Lincoln, registration and dinner are free and open to the public. However, pre-registration is required and space is limited, so register early.

This program is designed to not only educate the public on grief customs in other cultures, but to consider how Mourning Hope and other human service agencies can adapt to better address the needs of Nebraska's increasingly diverse population. As the racial, ethnic and cultural diversity of the state continues to increase, there is an ever-growing need for individuals to become culturally competent when providing care to grieving individuals and families.

He also teaches an innovative course, Grief in the Workplace at MidAmerica University in Kansas.

Nebraska Children's Grief Awareness Week

#

September 21 -- 27, 2009

The last week of September marks Mourning Hope Grief Center's 15th year of offering hope and healing to grieving youth in our community.

Anyone old enough to love, is also old enough to grieve. How adults respond following the death of someone significant in their lives has a major effect on the way youth react to death. If handled with warmth, acceptance and understanding, caring adults can help youth experience a valuable part of their personal growth and development.

- You are a role model for your children, even as they grieve. Openly share your emotions so your children can learn healthy expression skills.
- Death is a natural part of life. Allow children to be included in the family rituals and take an active role if they would like.
- Share information with children at a level they can understand. Use simple, concrete, but direct language and allow children plenty of opportunities to ask questions.
- Grief comes in waves -- some may be gentle and others very strong. There may be times when children seem like nothing has happened and other times when they are overcome by emotion. Be there for them - comforting, listening, hugging, and showing them you care.

Mourning Hope Family Reunion - 2007
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR THE ANNUAL "MOURNING HOPE FAMILY REUNION"

Sunday, September 20, 2009

Join us as we celebrate our 15th anniversary of companioning grieving children, teens, young adults, and their families.

Once a year, Mourning Hope schedules a Sunday afternoon to reconnect and gather as a family. The reunion affords an opportunity for participants to catch up on news and share experiences about their difficult journey called grief. On Sunday, September 20, Mourning Hope will open its house from 4:00 -- 6:00 p.m. to reunite families and volunteers who have attended any of the Center's grief support groups in the past. Memories will be shared, quilts from sessions will be viewed, and balloons with special messages to loved ones will be launched. Mourning Hope is a place where people who are grieving can begin on the road to hope again; and while tears will be shed, laughter will also be heard throughout the house.

Anyone who has previously attended or is currently participating in a Mourning Hope support group is invited to attend. Please call 402.488.8989 or email hope@mourninghope.org to RSVP.
