Holiday Hope/Art From Our Heart

Holiday Hope/Art From Our Heart is a one day event designed to help both bereaved adults and children cope during the holiday season.  In order to foster emotional healing and encourage individual creativity, the “Art From Our Heart” program partners skilled, local artists with children ages 5-17 who have experienced the death of someone significant in their lives.  Children and teens will be joined by professional local artists to create memory items honoring their loved one.  This will take place Saturday December 5 from 9am-1pm at Mourning Hope.  During this time, caregivers will meet separately from 9-11am for emotional peer grief support.  Though the event is created for grieving families, the adult support group is open to anyone in the community.  Anyone is welcome, but you must register online.

Tree Lighting Ceremony/Open House

Come make an ornament in honor of your loved one and take the opportunity to see your family quilt, while enjoying cookies and cocoa.  This open house and tree lighting ceremony will take place at Mourning Hope on December 13 from 5:30pm-7:30pm.

Art From Our Heart

In order to help youth who have experienced the serious illness or death of someone significant in their lives, Mourning Hope partners with skilled local artists to provide our community’s children with a healthy, creative outlet that helps participants express some of the emotions they may experience. This summer Mourning Hope is offering two separate sessions of “Art From Our Heart.” Both sessions will have a different art focus. Youth are invited to attend just one or both.

Caregivers also have the option to attend “Caregiver Connection,” while their child attends Art From Our Heart. This session, for adult caregivers, is full of encouraging ideas and discussion to help caregivers learn how to support their grieving children and also find support for themselves.

All art supplies and lunch are provided to participants free of charge. Please register today as these events fill up fast!

Registration is required. To register, please call Mourning Hope at 402.488.8989 or e-mail cmason@mourninghope.org.

Grief in the Workplace: Challenges, Obstacles and Compromises - Rachel Kodanaz

Wednesday, February 25, 2015
8:30 a.m. – 3:45 p.m.
Southeast Community College Continuing
Education Center, Lincoln
(6.0 contact hours awarded)

Every day in the United States alone, more than 30 million people are grieving the death of someone that they love. Many people who work together become like an extended family. Therefore when a colleague dies or one is grieving a death loss, the impact on his/her coworkers can be tremendous as well. Employees naturally bring grief into the workplace – compromising productivity and influencing workplace dynamics in a variety of manners. The proper support at work is essential for an individual to successfully navigate through the grieving process. This in turn helps their entire family cope with the stressors that come with grief. This powerful educational program will influence the way caregivers and employers both proactively and reactively address the bereavement process in their organizations. The day will address current challenges of mobile societies, company policies, social media, community crisis events, and compassionate fatigue while providing tools and ideas for supporting the workplace.

Who should attend?
This program is appropriate for anyone who has or is working with a grieving co-worker including, counselors, clergy, nurses, social workers and human resources staff in any setting.

Fee: $99 (lunch will be provided)
Thanks to the generosity of the Cooper Foundation, all attendees will receive a free copy of Ms. Kodanaz’s workbook, Grief In the Workplace Management Handbook, valued at nearly $30.

Holiday Season at Mourning Hope

Whatever your age, whoever has died, whatever the cause of death, holidays lived in the absence of a loved one can be very difficult. The arrival of the holidays often creates a variety of emotions, memories and expectations that center on family traditions and celebrations. While many people eagerly anticipate the annual holiday traditions, gatherings with family, and the positive feelings associated with the season, experiencing the holidays following the death of a loved one causes others to dread the upcoming season. In many cases, the traditional “bustle” of the season markedly contrasts with the emptiness and loneliness of grief.

The holiday season is an especially difficult time for those grieving the death of a loved one. Holidays are never the same – whether it’s the first holiday or many holidays after the death. At a time when many people celebrate with family and friends, others are experiencing feelings of sadness and isolation.

During the next two months, Mourning Hope will be offering several programs designed to help individuals navigate the challenging holiday season in the absence of their loved one.

All of the aforementioned programs are free to community members, but pre-registration is required. To register for any of the programs, call 402.488.8989 or e-mail: hope@mourninghope.org
