Profile #18 - Julie Smith
It is impossible to quantify the time that Julie Smith has given to Mourning Hope over the decades. Instead, we walk through our building and exclaim, "Julie Smith painted that or sewed that or helped us make that." Her hands and heart have helped shape Mourning Hope, and she continues to find new ways to serve.
At this year's Hope in the Morning breakfast, we honored Julie with the Spirit of Hope Award. As she took the microphone, we were reminded of her powerful story:
"I lost my own father to ALS when I was 16. At that time, I don't recall being offered grief services through school or the community. We simply "went on" without him. And we missed him dearly. I lost my first husband, the father to my two sons, when they were 4 and 7. We had many unanswered questions and a painful, heavy grief. I later lost my sister, my mother and most recently, my second husband. The grief is still heavy, but through this journey, I have found ways to lighten the impact it has on me and my family."
Julie is so often our first call when we need inspiration for a project or event. She has that unique mix of creativity and follow-through. It is clear that she volunteers with joy and with a determination to show people they are supported. Knowing it is impossible to pick just one, Julie shared with us a special memory she will never forget:
"The children are asked to bring an article of clothing of the person who died. We work with them to create a pillow that they can love and embrace in memory of their loved one. In doing this project, I encourage the volunteers to visit with the kids about their loss. It's a special time when they are not alone on this journey."
